Extinction Rebellion Boston's statement on the murder of George Floyd
Extinction Rebellion Boston stands in solidarity with people of color who are oppressed by racially motivated and state sanctioned violence. We affirm our commitment to end White Supremacy.
On Monday, May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a Black man from Minneapolis, was suffocated by a White police officer named Derek Chauvin. This kind of racial violence is so frequent that it runs the risk of becoming normalized. We must refuse to accept this reality and actively fight for justice.
In accordance with our chapter’s fourth demand, “There must be a just transition that prioritizes the most vulnerable people and establishes indigenous sovereignty and remediation led by and for communities suffering environmental injustice.”
Envisioning a livable future for all means that we must act now to ensure that our society protects Black life. This means that everyone must stand up to racism and racial violence. This call to action must unite people of all races and ethnicities, especially White people. Inaction is unacceptable. We must stand and act together.
